Julius was born on the 22nd of February in 1950 in East Meadow on Long Island in New York, but grew up in Hempstead. At this early age, he decided to change his residence and educate himself in Roosevelt, New York in which he was a student of Roosevelt High School.

Julius Erving enrolled in college in 1968 at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. After transferring there he only spent two varsity college basketball seasons with them where on average he scored 26.3 points and 20.2 per game, at the rate of nearly NCAA men records of basketball.

Due the action of the NCAA to ban dunking, many of Erving’s spectacular dunking skills were still undisplayed to the public. Erving retired from basketball and shifted to business and became an owner of a Coca Colone plant in Philadelphia.

In 1997 he was hired by the front office of the Orlando Magic basketball team. The year following that, Erving joined up with former NFL player Joe Washington to form a NASCAR Busch Series team. Among other things he was a member of boards of directors of such companies as Converse, Saks and Sports Authority.

Julius Erving in 1979 acted in a movie of sports comedy titled “The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh” in which many N.B.A stars featured. Unexpectedly, he acted in a movie, “Philadelphia” the legal capacity drama 1993.

Personal Life

Erving married Turquoise in 1972 and the couple has four children; Cory, one of the sons died in a drowned incident in 2000. As a husband, he cheated his wife with sportswriter Samantha Stevenson with whom he had a daughter Alexandra in 1980.

But Erving only first encounter Alexandra for the first time on Halloween, in 2008 his daughter had grown up to be a professional tennis player.

Endorsements

Julius signed what is thought to be the first basketball shoe endorsement deal upon the merger of the ABA and NBA in 1976. This like for like contract was for $20,000 a year, which as a sum was unprecedented at the time.
