Lumumba Shakur or Edwin Garland Woods, was an activist in African Americans seeking equal rights and in Black Power movement in the USA. He was from the Shakur family, a black activist family well involved in the fight for the blacks.
Early Life
Lumumba Shakur was born in the early 1940’s in the Southern United States where colored people were restricted from moving around freely. He was raised amid racially charged prejudices and discrimination and this spurred him on to fight for civil rights and against racism.
During his childhood and his young age, Lumumba Shakur was introduced to severally different philosophies of Black liberation and rights. He was soon heavily involved in activism especially in the fight against racism and became an influential figure in such a struggle. This is why at this stage Lumumba Shakur had adopted a different name.
Career
Lumumba Shakur’s involvement in activism started in the 1960s when he became part and parcel of the Black Panther Party which was an America militant group formed with the main aim of protesting the black oppression in the America.
The BPP was highly militant against police violence and racism in the society and Lumumba Shakur was a key operative of the group. He rapidly promoted through to positions and actively involved in the BPP community projects which included children’s free breakfast programs, health clinics and education.
Lumumba Shakur embarked on provoking people to gain followers for protests and demonstrations to changes the social norms. Because of his commitment to the cause he became a respected leader in the movement.

Malcolm Lumumba’s Spouse was Afeni Shakur Malcom who was an active Black Panther Party member and a civil rights activist. Afeni Marque Shakur, born as Alice Faye Williams, was an activist, teacher and most importantly the mother of a legendary rapper known as Tupac Shakur.
Martin and Coretta had a strong love and a common cause – the struggle for the sake of African-Americans’ rights. Apart from being a strong willed and devoted mother, Afeni Shakur was promoted to a high rank with the Black Panther Party.
Besides affection, love and mutual understanding, the relations of the couple were based on concerns for the welfare of the community. However, going through the article, their marriage wasn’t easy as they had to deal with activism and constant harassment from the police.
