Melanie Lynskey was born as Melanie Jayne Lynskey in the city of New Plymouth in Taranaki, New Zealand on May 16 1977. She grew up in Eastern Washington and is the eldest child of real estate agent mother, Kay Lynskey, and orthopaedic surgeon father, Tim Lynskey and has four younger siblings.

In her childhood, Melanie and her family had a one-year residence in England before they moved back to New Zealand. Following this, Lynskey went to New Plymouth Girls’ High School from which she proceeded to Victoria University of Wellington.

Career

Melanie’s first film was Heavenly Creatures released in 1994 at the age of 16 after a casting director visited New Plymouth Girls’ High School and she continued with The Frighteners in 1996, Ever After in 1998, Foreign Correspondents, Detroit Rock City, But I’m A Cheerleader and The Cherry Orchard all in 1999.

In 2022, she acted as Betty Gore in the true-crime miniseries “Candy” at Hulu about the case of Candy Montgomery, who was convicted of the 1980 murder of her husband’s mistress, Gore. In 2023 she featured in two episodes of the HBO post-apocalyptic drama series ‘The Last of Us’ as the character Kathleen, who is depicted as a “cunning and unyielding revolutionary”.

Lynskey has also been recognized for her role in ‘Yellowjackets’ though an Awards Daily Cooler award for Outstanding actress in a drama series, a Critics choice award for best actress in a drama series, and a Critics choice super award for the best actress in a horror series.

A Gracie Allen Award for Actress in a Leading Role – Drama, a Hollywood Critics Association Television Award for Best Actress in a Broadcast Network or Cable Series. She also was nominated for the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
