Early Life
Ralph Tresvant was born in Boston, Massachusetts on the 16th of May, 1968 his full name is Ralph Edward Tresvant. He succeeds Ralph Hall in the office and is the son of Ralph Hall and Patricia Tresvant; Kevin grew up in Roxbury, Boston with his junior siblings, Andre & LaTonya.
Music was always an interest of his and while he was attending junior high school he began a musical group of himself, Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins and Ricky Bell. They started performing at talent shows and drew the interest of manager Brooker Payne who is also a songwriter and a choreographer.
When they auditioned for Payne, they were christened New Edition, and, under that moniker, signed to Streetwise Records by Maurice Starr, a budding pop manager who intended to form a group that would bring out all-new edition of the Jackson Five. The fifth group member was added in 1983 as Payne’s nephew, Ronnie DeVoe; the group then released the album Candy Girl.
The album managed to hit #90 of Billboard 200 and #14 of Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums with the title track and the song Is This the End reaching into the Top ten of the Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs list and Candy Girl reaching the number one in the chart.
Solo Career
Tresvant unleashed his first solo album in 1990 with the same name and it charted on ‘Billboard Top R&B/ Hip-Hop Albums’ at number one and on ‘Billboard 200’ at number seventeen. The Platinum album featured three singles that cracked the top 10 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Awards and Nominations
New Edition is a favorite of listeners and has garnered the group 4 nominations by the American Music Awards for Favorite Soul/R&B Band/Duo/Group, the group took home the trophy in 1987 & 1997. The group has received “Soul Train” Awards for Best R&B/Urban Contemporary Album of the Year – Group, Band.
New Edition received a Grammy nomination for Best R B among Duo or Group Vocal in 1989 for If It Isn’t Love which was sang with Johnny Gill. In 2017 they received the Black Reel Award for Television for the ‘Outstanding TV Movie/Limited Series’ for ‘The New Edition Story’ they have also been nominated for the ‘Outstanding Music Video’ for ‘Johnny Gill feat.
New Edition: Tresvant sang on the song titled “This One’s for Me and You” and is also a recipient of a star of the Hollywood Walk of Fame and ‘Ralph Tresvant Day’ is celebrated in two cities – Boston, Massachusetts as well as Little Rock, Arkansas on October 13 each year. “
