Dudley Moore is an English celebrity who came into the limelight because of his career. He came into the limelight as a talented writer, after he was part of the team that co-wrote Beyond the Fringe, a satiric comedy.

Moore would go on to collaborate with his partners until he relocated to Los Angeles in the mid-1970s to focus on film acting. He starred in Hollywood productions, Arthur and Foul Play, exposing his comedy acting skills. As a result of his role in Arthur, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor and won the Golden Globe Award.

Dudley Moore’s Early Life

Dudley Moore was born on April 19, 1935, in Central London. His mother worked as a secretary, while his father was a railway electrician. He grew up alongside his older sister Barbara.

Moore was short, measuring 1.57 m. Also, he had club feet which required him to visit the hospital frequently. While his right foot responded well to corrective treatment, the left foot twisted permanently, weathering his leg below the knee. He remained conscious of the condition throughout his life.

Moore began developing an interest in music at age six. When he was eleven, he earned a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music where he took up the violin, musical theory, composition, and organ.

He grew fond of organ and piano, and he became a talented pianist and organist. He began playing the organ at local church weddings. While attending Dagenham County High School, he started receiving dedicated musical tuition from Peter Cork. Peter helped Moore to secure an organ scholarship to Magdalene College.

Moore loved jazz music and he became an accomplished jazz pianist and composer. He began working with musician John Dankworth before he left the band in 1960 for Beyond the Fringe. Besides having a successful career in the music and film industry, he partnered with Tony Bill to open a restaurant. It was closed in 2000, after operating for almost two decades.

Moore’s Personal Life

Moore was married four times. His first marriage was to actress Suzy Kendall, and it lasted four years. He wed Tuesday Weld in 1975 and divorced in 1980, after welcoming their son, Patrick. He married Borgan Lane and lastly to Nicole Rothschild between 1994 and 1998.

While Moore maintained a good relationship with his former wives, he prohibited Rothschild from attending his funeral.
